FAQs
As a senior (or caregiver) I want to try medical cannabis as an option but where do I begin?
Each state has its own rules, for Florida you need to start with a physician who has been certified to approve medical cannabis for their patients. This physician will need a medical record from your primary care physician indicating which qualifying diagnosis you are looking to treat. Once this is complete you will need to provide proof of Florida residency (usually a copy of your driver's license) and an email address to register with the state as a Florida medical marijuana patient. We can help you through this entire process every step of the way!
Do I need to go to a specialist or can my doctor prescribe medical cannabis?
In Florida, physicians must complete additional training to allow them to certify patients as eligible for medical cannabis. Therefore only certified physicians can authorize medical cannabis so you may need to see an additional physician. The published list of qualified physicians can be found here. We work closely with approved physicians and can help you find you the right physician. We can even assist with the setup of the appointment if you wish.
How to I select the right medication?
Although it may be tempting to pick a product based on the flavor, do not make this mistake. Product selection begins with determining the desired impact of medical cannabis. Are you looking to treat sleep issues, anxiety, lessen the symptoms of Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease, help treat depression, etc.? Once you have the outcome desired, select cannabinoids that are most effective for these conditions. Finally, start with a low dose and adjust up to target dosing levels but consider any prescription medication which may have a drug interaction that will require an increased or decreased dose adjustment.
What dose do I need/ How much do I take?
Often the ideal dosing regimen requires the use of two different products at differing frequencies as well as a schedule that increases the dosing slowly, over time. "Go low and start slow" are the five words often repeated by cannabis healthcare professionals. Cannabis is personalized medicine with a biphasic response. That means that each individual is going to respond differently to the same product so the dosing and product selection must be individualized. Truly the patient needs to be in charge of identifying which dose is right for him/her based on the response. Senior Remedy staff are here to coach you and be your guide along that journey. Since cannabis has a biphasic dose response, there will be different effects at low and high doses. If a dose gets too high, the results can be worse, not better. There truly is a "sweet spot" in dosing but that can only be determined by the individual.
Why can I buy CBD in lots of places but I can only get THC from dispensaries?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is legal in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill which defines Hemp (versus Cannabis). Since CBD does not have intoxicating effects ("high"), it had an easier path to legalization. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from Cannabis is still considered an illegal substance by the DEA. States have begun creating their own rules to allow Cannabis to be sold and used in their states. Some states allow recreational use while others like Florida only allow medical cannabis use. To purchase any product with significant levels of THC in Florida legally, it must be sold by a registered dispensary.
Can I take my current medication along with medical cannabis?
The pharmacists at Senior Remedy will review your current medication profile to assure that cannabis can be taken safely without risk of drug interactions or complications. In most instances, cannabis can be taken along with prescription medication. In fact we've seen many instances where medication for pain or anxiety was no longer needed or the dose was lowered after using cannabis. Rest assured, we evaluate your prescription, non-prescription, and cannabinoid therapy holistically to find the best outcomes. If you want to check if your current medication has drug interactions with cannabis, you can find search tools online.
Why is this all so confusing?
We ask the same question every day! The product itself is complicated, with 66+ cannabinoids and 140+ terpenes identified to date. There are hundreds of combinations of substances present in the cannabis flower that all have their own unique effects. Pair that with the government's historical approach to cannabis, making it illegal, prevented the ability to conduct solid research on the product until recently. That means we still have a lot to learn and have just scratched the surface. Finally, the legal cannabis industry in the states has become big business. The focus has shifted from creating products that can benefit patients with certain conditions to what will sell the most, at the highest margin. Unfortunately, that usually means a focus on high-THC products which people will continue to buy for the feeling it creates.
Is medical cannabis legal?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is legal in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill which defines Hemp (versus Cannabis). Since CBD does not have intoxicating effects ("high"), it had an easier path to legalization. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from Cannabis in amounts greater than 0.3% is still considered an illegal substance by the DEA. States have begun creating their own rules to allow Cannabis to be sold and used in their states. Some states allow recreational use while others like Florida only allow medical cannabis use. To purchase any product with THC in Florida legally, it must be sold by a registered dispensary.
How do I begin, where do I buy the medication?
That's where our membership program can help greatly but we have listed some of our favorite, frequently recommended products on our approved products page. Beginning is the challenge since you will need to find the most reliable company with the product containing the ideal amount of cannabinoids and determine the safest dosing plan. Often the ideal dosing regimen requires the use of two different products at differing frequencies as well as a schedule that increases the dosing slowly over time. "Go low and start slow" are the five words often repeated by cannabis healthcare professionals. Our services include the recommendation on which product(s) to purchase at the respective company as well as facilitating how to get the product delivered to your address.
Do I have to feel "high" when I take cannabis?
No! In fact, unless you want to feel high, we build our programming and dosing around the prevention of this feeling. There are strategies that can be implemented, such as introducing CBD into the regimen, which greatly reduces that feeling and definitely decrease it over time. The negative health consequences from a fall can greatly impact your life so we plan accordingly to prevent the intoxication feeling.
Why do I need your services? Won't the physician or dispensary consultant help me with my care?
Let's face it, dispensaries are in business to sell you products that have the highest margins (usually the highest THC). Physicians certified in medical cannabis have the knowledge but not necessarily the time to help you find the right product. The ideal product(s) for seniors can be difficult to find and may require taking two different products from different suppliers. We know that medical cannabis can greatly improve the lives of seniors with certain health conditions. We provide a service to take advantage of this option without the fear of something going wrong. We walk along side you every step of the way, making adjustments based on how you are feeling and the impact on your condition. Since we are pharmacists we fully understand the role of your prescription medication during the process.
How much does all this cost?
Our services are all-inclusive, we charge an annual fee. By removing any financial incentives from cannabis dispensaries, CBD companies, and insurance plans we can make decisions solely based on what is best for you, the patient. The products we recommend are not included in our fees but as part of our service, we do our best to negotiate the best price possible on your behalf.
